I ♥ mamá

¡Feliz día a todas las madres! Y feliz día también a todas las hijas por la parte que nos toca: somos muy afortunadas por tener unas mamis generosas que nos quieren incondicionalmente y que siempre, siempre, siempre están ahí cuando las necesitamos. Yo estoy súper orgullosa de la mía como persona y también en su papel de madre. Tanto, que sé que el día que yo tenga mis propios hijos me convertiré en una fotocopia de ella y la educación que me ha dado. Y sí, seré una pesada también... pero es parte inherente de ser madre. 

Happy Mother's Day, especially if you're a mum! And happy day to all daughters too because we're very lucky to have such generous mums who love us unconditionally and who are always, always, always there when we need them. I'm super proud of mine because I love her as a person, as a friend, as my confidant..., and I'm so proud of the way she brought me up that I'd like to be just like her when I have my own children. And yes, I will also be boring and grumpy ... but this is unavoidable when you're a "mamá".

Por su 56 cumpleaños (sí mamá, digo la edad porque estás estupenda) le regalé un tapiz para decorar la pared. Sin embargo, las fotos se quedaron guardadas en el ordenador esperando un buen momento para publicarlas y por eso lo publico hoy, con un par de meses de retraso.

For her 56^th  birthday (yes mum, I say your age because you look great!), I gave her a wall hanging to deck the walls of her sewing room. However, the photos have been saved on my laptop, patiently waiting for the perfect moment to post them and that's why I show them to you today, a couple of months later.

Lo hice combinando telas de lino (el fondo, las ovejitas, la cestita y el pedestal de la máquina de coser) con retales que tenía de otros trabajos que había hecho. Los dibujos son de Zulú&co., que tiene un estilo country encantador (podéis entrontrar su blog aquí) y los patrones se pueden descargar en el blog de Isabel Granados (clic aquí). For this project I used linen (background, sheep, basket and table) and some cotton scraps I had left over. The drawings were designed by Zulú&co., whose blog is full of ideas. En las siguientes fotos podéis ver en detalle algunos de los elementos que componen el "cuadro" (no sé cómo llamarlo realmente) y veréis que todo está aplicado a mano con puntada escondida. Aunque tardé un poco en hacerlo porque es laborioso, disfruté mucho haciéndolo todo a mano en el sofá (me encanta la "feina de sofà" como yo lo llamo: "trabajo de sofá" sería la traducción). Pido disculpas por la calidad de las fotos, tengo que ahorrar para comprar un objetivo para hacer fotos de cerca. 

Here you are some close-up photos of this mini-quilt. You can  see that everything was appliquéd by hand using a hidden stitch.  Although it took me a while to finish this project, I enjoyed making it all by hand. I love to slouch on the sofa in the evening and sew until I am overcome with drowsiness. (I love "feina of sofà" as I call it, "sofa work" would be the translation). I apologize for the quality of the photos, I have to save some €€€ and buy a new lens for close-up pictures. A dresden placemat and a patchwork dog

Hoy os quería enseñar un par de cositas que he acabado y que hace días que decoran mi casa. En primer lugar, un "proyecto de fin de semana" que hacía tiempo había incluido en mi lista de cosas pendientes. La idea la saqué de uno de mis blogs preferidos, nanaCompany, después de ver algunas fotos "inspiradoras" en su cuenta de flickr. La verdad es que esta chica tiene un estilo dulce y delicado que me encanta y ha conseguido hacerlo muy personal e identificable. Empecé mi búsqueda de tutoriales y di con uno que me gustó, podéis encontrarlo aquí. Para darle mi toque personal y para lograr que combinara con el resto de cositas que he hecho para la casa, utilicé telas Tilda... ¡cómo no! ;) El centro es una mezcla de lino y algodón. Me pareció divertido aplicar una taza ya que voy a usar este tapete básicamente para apoyar la taza de café mientras hago punto en el sofá (más adelante ya os detallaré mi aventura en el mundo del punto de media). 

Today I wanted to show you a couple of things I've done lately. First of all, a "weekend project" that had been in my "to-do" board on Pinterest for ages. I got the idea from one of my favorite blogs, nanaCompany, after seeing these inspiring pictures on flickr. The truth is that this girl has the sweetest taste ever and I love the delicate and personal style she has created. I started a Google research for tutorials and I found one I really liked (you can find it here). To give the placemat my personal touch and to match the other patchworky stuff I've made for home, I used Tilda fabrics... as always! ;) The centre of the placemat is a cotton-linen blend. I found it cute to appliqué a cuppa since I am going to use this placemat to put my coffee mug on while I knit on the couch at night (I will explain my knitting adventure to you soon).

También os quería enseñar un perrito de patchwork que hice para tapar la brisita fría que entra por debajo de la puerta en invierno. Sin embargo, me gusta tanto que se ha quedado a hacernos compañía (y de paso decorar) nuestro comedor. 

I also wanted to show you the Daschund door draft stopper I made last winter to keep out the cold air (and out heating bills affordable!). However, I like it so much that, even though it's springtime now, he is still in our living room.  

Aunque la perrita de mis ojos no es ésta sino mi Kitty, que ya pronto cumplirá 4 años, aunque con su cara de cachorrito y sus interminables ganas de jugar no lo parezca. Así era cuando nos la encontramos:

However, the apple of my eyes isn't this dog but my Kitty, who will turn 4 soon (but with her puppy face and her incredible amount of energy and her endless desire to play, one would never say). She was tiny when we found her:

I love Ipad

¡Cómo pasa el tiempo! En la última entrada os hablé del viaje que estaba a punto de hacer a Inglaterra y ya ha pasado algo más de una semana desde que volví. La verdad es que fue todo genial y sólo me puedo quejar del frío que pasamos... ¡¡¡llegamos a temperaturas de -5ºC!!! Os dejo con unas fotos de la excursión que hicimos a Cambridge para que lo comprobéis: 

My, how time flies! In my last post I told you I was going on a school trip to England... and it's been more than a week since I came back home. The truth is that everything was perfect... except for the weather! It was freezing cold and daytime temperatures reached -5ºC!!! Here you are some pics I took during a one-day trip to Cambridge:

De vuelta en casa, he continuado con mis labores y la verdad es que he acabado algunos proyectos que tenía empezados y que iré publicando durante esta semana. El primero es muy sencillo pero es algo que necesitaba y eso es algo que me encanta: patchwork + útil. 

Back home, I've been working on some UFO's I had started quite a long time ago. I hope I can show my finished work soon. The first project is very simple but it's something I needed too and that's the perfect match: sew useful.

Se trata de un kit de "Love Patch" (que es el nombre de mis profes de patch trabajando juntas). Otra vez combino Lino y telas Tilda (es mi combinación preferida) aunque si tuviera que hacerlo otra vez escogería un lino liso para el fondo en lugar de un lino de cuadros porque es muy difícil de trabajar ya que no quedan rectos. Las letras también son estilo "Tilda". 

I bought it as a kit from "Love Patch" (that's the name of my teachers working together). I used (again) Tilda fabrics and linen (my favorite combination). I love how it turned out but I must admit that if I had to make another one, I would choose a solid linen for the background instead of a  printed linen... the squares were really difficult to align (in fact, they're reeeeaaally far from perfect). I used "Tilda style" handwriting for the embroidered text again.

La parte de atrás imita un sobre cerrado. The back looks like an envelope. 

Y la cremallera es tipo "chaqueta" de manera que el carrito se puede sacar y permite abrir la funda por completo. 

I inserted a "jacket" zipper so that it opens wide.

Para el interior utilicé un lino azul ("La couture printed linen" de Stof dk.) Y como veis, para sujetar el Ipad me decanté por lo práctico: velcro. No se ven costuras porque todas quedan escondidas, la funda la cerré con "puntada escondida" en la parte central del interior. Para proteger el Ipad, esta funda lleva dos guatas: una guata blandita en la parte que toca al interior y una guata rígida en la parte que toca al lino de cuadritos. 

For the inside, I used a blue printed linen ("The couture printed linen" from Stof dk.) I went for the practical option: velcro, which is ideal for holding the iPad. In order to protect the iPad, this case has got two waddings: a fusible cotton-blend wadding and a heavy stabilizer.

Tilda fabric beach bag

Bolsa de playa con telas Tilda 

De nuevo os enseño algo que cosí hace bastante tiempo pero es que ya sabéis que las últimas semanas de trimestre en una escuela son una locura (informes, reuniones, excursiones, álbumes, etc.) y por si fuera poco... ¡el sábado me voy a Inglaterra! No son vacaciones, me voy con un grupo de alumnos a hacer un curso de una semana en un pueblo llamado Bury St. Edmunds. Es poquito tiempo y de hecho se trata de una "primera toma de contacto" con la cultura inglesa ya que los alumnos vivirán con famílias británicas. Todavía no he tenido tiempo ni de prepararme la maleta ¡así que de coser ni hablamos! El bolso que os enseño lo hice el verano pasado y no dejé de ponérmelo en todo el verano porque es súper práctico para ir a la playa ya que tiene un tamaño ideal para guardar la toalla... sí, sí, ¡cabe la toalla! El patrón es de uno de los primeros libros de Tone Finnanger, titulado "Labores para la casa y muñecos de tela con motivos veraniegos". Utilicé una tela estampada de la colección de verano 2012 que me encanta porque mantiene el "estilo Tilda" pero es mucho más extremada. El borde del bolso es de lino y el interior está forrado con una tela básica de color azul marino con estampado de letras de Stoff. La cinta fucsia de pompones es también de "Tilda" y aunque al principio no me convencía, ¡cuando vi el resultado final me encantó! Para que la bolsa quedara bien armada utilicé una guata rígida termoadhesiva (tengo que reconocer que después de todo el traqueteo que le di perdió un poco la forma cuadradita y cogió más forma tipo bolso). 

A ver si me animo a hacer más bolsos o accesorios que pueda vestir, de hecho ya me ronda alguna idea por la cabeza porque tengo telas nuevas que me encantan pero a veces me da lástima cortarlas... ¡quedan tan bonitas en la estantería que me da pena cortarlas! ¿Es eso normal? Espero no ser la única... ¡es que son preciosas!

Baby play mat

Tapiz de juegos 

Durante todo el invierno no he estado enferma ni un sólo día, me salvé de la primera "pasa" de gripe (y eso trabajando con niños es todo un logro), pero esta semana he caído... así que como no he podido coser mucho, os pongo unas fotos de un tapiz de juegos que hice para unos hermanos gemelos hace un par (o tres, o cuatro) de meses. 

I was impressed I hadn't been sick this winter because bad colds and tummy bugs have been going around at school all winter and just a few teachers had managed not to catch...  I guess I should have knocked on wood!  I started feeling a bit sick on Thursday and thanks to my last "sick-weekend", I haven't had time for sewing. What I show you today is a baby play mat I made for one of my boyfriend's workmates who had two baby twins last year.

Tenía que hacer "algo" para regalar en cuestión de 48 horas y a mi profe de patch, Ainhoa, se le ocurrió esto. Es un proyecto súper sencillo que se cose en un momento porque va acolchado con "nuditos" y no lleva biés. Lo único que requiere un ratito largo de dedicación es el bordado a mano de los nombres en el centro del tapiz. Como veis, las letras son estilo Tilda y las dibujó Isabel (podéis ver su blog aquí).

I had to create "something" in 48 hours and my sewing teacher, Ainhoa, came up with this idea. It's an easy peasy sewing project because I used knots to "tie" the quilt together and there is no bias binding to deal with. The only thing I spent some time on was the hand-stitched embroidery. The names were written by Isabel (see her blog here) who drew a Tilda kind of letter. 

Además de ser un proyecto rápido también es económico ya que utilicé unas sábanas de Ikea que compré hace mucho tiempo cuando las vi en liquidación en la sección de niños. Actualmente ya no se encuentran a la venta pero si os gusta la idea, ¡seguro que encontraréis sábanas bonísimas y baratitas en Ikea! Lo que hice fue utilizar la sábana bajera de rayitas para hacer la base del tapiz y después recortar y aplicar (con papel adhesivo y pespunte a máquina) los dibujos que más me gustaron. Los dibujos iban en la sábana y me sobraron un montón así que seguramente volveréis a ver estos animalitos por el blog.

Besides being a quick project, it is also economical because I used Ikea sheets! I fussy cut the animal drawings on the fabric and appliquéd them onto the striped sheet using fusible web.  

Para la trasera escogí una tela básica en color azul "denim" que combinaba a la perfección y también era muy económica. Al final me gustó el resultado... y a la mamá de los peques también ¡y eso es lo más importante!

For the background fabric, I used a denim blue solid colour. At the end, I liked the result and the twins' mum loved it too... and that is the most important thing!

Baby gifts for Júlia

Regalitos de bebé para Júlia

Hace tres semanas llegó a nuestra familia un nuevo miembro, una bebita preciosa llamada Júlia. Como os comenté hace un tiempo cuando os hablaba de nuestras costumbres navideñas, tengo una familia muy grande que está muy unida y de la que me siento súper orgullosa. Júlia pertenece a la nueva generación de "patochos" y "patochas" porque es hija de mi primo. Para darle la bienvenida le preparé una banderola con su nombre para que sus papis puedan colgarla en la habitación como decoración. 

We welcomed a new baby into our family three weeks ago, a beautiful girl named Julia. As I told you a while ago when I talked about our Christmas traditions, I come from a big family that is very close. Family remains really important to me and I am very proud of mine. Julia belongs to the new generation of "patochos" and "patochas" (as my family is known) because she is my cousin's daughter. To welcome her, I made a bunting with her name on to decorate her bedroom walls.

Para hacer la banderola utilicé una base de mezcla lino/algodón y apliqué las letras que había dibujado en retales de telas Tilda y de la colección "Vintage Modern" de Bonnie & Camille para Moda. 

To make the bunting, I used a cotton-linen blend fabric for the background and I appliqued the letters using fusible web and some scraps of fabric (Tilda and "Vintage Modern" by Bonnie & Camille for Moda). 

Para juntar las letras utilicé un bies de lino en el mismo tono con el detalle de una cinta en la parte superior que me pareció muy dulce. Para la parte trasera de las letras usé una tela básica de topos de Riley Blake. 

I sewed the letters onto one metre of cotton-linen blend bias binding which I had purchased a long time ago.  I love the pretty detail on top 'cause I think it gives the bunting a sweet touch. I used a simple blue polka dot fabric by Riley Blake for the back of the letters. 

Júlia es la pequeña de la familia pero tiene una hermana mayor simpatiquísima llamada Martina a la que también le llevamos un regalito: una osita del libro "Muñecos de tela con diseños fantásticos y creativos" de Rosalie Quinlan y Melanie Huriston. Esta osita la hizo mi madre y me encanta el resultado porque la combinación de telas para la ropita es una monada y porque el gesto de "boba" de la osita me resulta muy tierno. 

¡Enhorabuena mamá, estás hecha una artista! 

Júlia is the baby of the family but has an elder sister called Martina. My mum made a gift for her too: a cute and fun teddy bear. The pattern is from a book written by Rosalie Quinlan & Melanie Huriston (Sewn toy tales: 12 fun characters to make and love) I really like the fabrics she used and I love the cute "dumb" look on the doll's face. 

Congratulations Mum, it's lovely!

Pretty Pouch Swap... Part II

Intercambio de bolsita-neceser... Parte II

¿Recordáis cuando hace un par de entradas os hablé del intercambio en el que estaba participando? Se trataba de intercambiar una bolsita tipo neceser con otra compañera y llenarla de golosinas y chocolatinas para luego enviársela como si de un amigo invisible se tratara. Pues bien, hoy os enseño el neceser que hice para Kimberly y que envié nada más y nada menos que hasta Kentucky.

Do you remember the pretty pouch swap I mentioned a few weeks back? Participants had to make a zipper pouch or similar item and purchase some chocolates or sweets to send to the recipient. Well now that the swap is over, tad a... drumroll... this is what I made for Kimberly from Kentucky. 

Antes de comenzar a hacer el neceser estuve "chafardeando" el blog de Kimberly y su cuenta en Pinterest para invesigar sus gustos y su estilo. Después, me puse en contacto con ella por email y me envió algunas fotos de diferentes bolsitas que le gustaban. Escogí las telas de la colección "Little Apples" de Aneela Hoey porque en la encuesta que Kimberly había rellenado al inscribirse al intercambio la había citado como una de sus diseñadoras preferidas.

Before making the pouch, I tried to identify Kimberly's style. To do so, I strolled through her blog and  her Pinterest boards. Then, I contacted her by email and she sent me some photos of some pouches she liked. I chose the bright and colourful "Little Apples"collection because Kimberly mentioned Aneela Hoey as one of her favourite fabric designers.  

Para hacer la flor del centro utilicé la técnica del English Paper Piecing de la que ya os hablé cuando os enseñé mi cojín de hexágonos. 

I made the flower using some hexies and sewing them by hand using the English Paper Piecing Technique (you can see my hexies pillow in this post). 

En la foto de arriba se puede ver el forro del neceser. Escogí una telita de topos de Riley Blake.

For the lining, I chose a dotted fabric from Riley Blake. 

Y como recordaréis, el neceser debía ir lleno de chuches y chocolatinas... La primera idea que tuve fue buscar golosinas hechas aquí que no se pudieran comprar en Estados Unidos pero después se me ocurrió comprar las chuches que me recordaban a mi infancia... estas eran mis preferidas.

I put some chocolates and sweets into the pouch... At first, I thought that it'd be a good idea to buy sweets made in Spain, those chocolates that Kimberly might not be able to find in the USA but then I decided to buy the chocolates that reminded me of my childhood... these were my favourite treats when I was a child. 

Sólo espero que tanto el neceser como las chuches le gusten a mi compañera... 

I really hope my partner likes both the pouch and the sweets...
